In Middle School, students are provided opportunities to select and rank their top four Elective courses in the Spring of the prior year..
What are Electives?
Elective classes offer students an opportunity to explore a variety of interests and curiosities that fall outside the core curriculum.
Elective classes are a semester long, and allow for deeper exploration within a predetermined subject matter. Students will choose and rank four Electives during their Online Registration Application.
Example Electives course framework
For example, 6th-grade students who enroll in General Media will explore a variety of media forms, including audio, visual, film, and print. Students will discuss how media is used in society to communicate, advertise, and entertain viewers.
The 6th-grade General Media class is a precursor to Digital Print Media and Digital Film Media, offered in 7th and 8th grades, and builds upon the content from the 6th-grade course. Digital Print Media will dive into the history surrounding newspapers, magazines, and yearbooks, meanwhile, Digital Film Media analyzes how we use film in today's world to create news broadcasts, films, and advertisements.
Do I automatically get my first choice class?
It is with the greatest commitment to honor students elective choice(s), however, due to the number of students enrolled, and the limited seats available in each class, we cannot guarantee students will be enrolled in their choice(s). Students who are experiencing issues with their assigned Elective course may contact their school office for additional support.
Why can't I choose my Elective?
Students who demonstrate a need for additional academic support are enrolled in Learning Lab or Resource Study Skills in place of an Elective.
Learning Lab and Resource Study Skills classes allows students to receive individualized instructional support with their core curriculum studies. Once a student demonstrates proficiency in their skills, they will have the option to select and enroll in an Elective course.
